Gloria's Story:
Macular Degeneration
I have a diagnosis of Wet Macular Degeneration.
Client Since 2000
I am a client of ABVI and have been since the year 2000.
How ABVI Has Helped Me
I am most grateful to my husband who has been a constant
help. He took me to ABVI, I would not have proceeded there on my own.
I have been very grateful to the Association for all the help. They're
so positive, they're are also very helpful and generous in their feeling
and identification they help to put you in touch with the organizations
within the community that can offer the services that you need. I have
always felt and I think I have spoken before, that I think the fact that
they are in the area is a great reason to live here because I have friends
who live out of state and maybe more remote areas and with a similar situation
they don't really have any organization like that to go to.
I would not have known about the talking book machine, I
would not have know about the CCTV, it has just been wonderful. So I thank
-- I am very grateful to them, I am grateful to the agencies that help
to fund ABVI because that is a non-profit organization I understand and
they are dependent on community help on people who make contributions
personally and it is a wonderful group to have been able to have them
so close at hand.
How ABVI Can Help You
I have a number of contacts, people my age, people in church
so forth, as they age they often develop some sort of vision difficulty
and I have promoted ABVI in many ways. I have given them brochures and
say contact them, they are such a great help. You will have a caseworker
who will come in and help you in all the aspects of daily living and daily
tasks which are difficult. You have a lot of people who live alone who
really need that very much. I have been fortunate, I still have my husband,
who lives with me and he takes over sometimes when I can't. But if you
are totally dependent on your own resources ABVI is certainly a wonderful,
wonderful organization in the community.
Anyone Is Eligible
My Husband made regular contributions to the organization
before we ever needed the organization and to me, as I said before, it
was really a group that you attended if you were blind or you were very
poor and that is not really the case. It is for people with low vision,
such as myself, and also people of any income level nothing is based on
income level.
