Paul's Story:
How I Felt When I Learned of My Diagnosis
When I first found out about having Retinitas Pigmentosa
it was a very scary thing. It was a situation where -- Oh my gosh, I am
going to go blind, and I am no going to be able to do my work and support
my family and all of these things and I just stopped and I said - What
are you talking about? This is going to work.
ABVI is a Wonderful Experience
I think that it has been a wonderful experience. The people
that I have met, the people that I work with at ABVI, in addition to the
people that ABVI helps, I think that many times in our daily lives that
we forget about the people who are in need.
Independence - - - My Trip Abroad
About two years ago I took a trip to Amsterdam and also
to Barcelona. I went by myself, which was very interesting for me. I wanted
to see if I could do it. And with the aid of my cane and also with some
of the things that John taught me. I was able to go through the airport
being able to travel around being very touristy like everyone else and
be able to accomplish the trip without any real incidents.
ABVI's Wide Range of Services
One of the things when I first went to the Association for
the Blind & Visually Impaired I thought that it was only people who
were completely blind. I didn't realize the tremendous scope of the things
that they actually did for people and I really didn't realize that it
was for people that were visually impaired and that means it could be
a very, very broad range of things and they were so very kind and very
helpful when I went there, they made me feel much more comfortable. The
other thing is that there is nothing scary about it, the scariest part
is about getting over the fact that you are scared about what is happening
to you, and once you can do that and put that aside, you find out that
they are regular people and that you are a regular person also.
I Am a Board Member and a Client
I am a Board Member at ABVI and I am also a client with
them.
ABVI Needs Your Donations
In all of these things that we have done they have all been
with the thought in mind of keeping the Association so that they could
continue with their work.
