Visual Screening

What do Lehigh County Kindergarteners and Senior Citizens have in common? Access to our Visual Screening through ABVI Prevention Services. A wonderful group of volunteers demonstrate their time and concern for others through providing visual screenings to Nursery Schools, Day Cares, pre-Kindergarten events, and community health fairs.

A Testimonial

Here is what one Mother recently wrote to ABVI about the assistance her daughter received from her kindergarten screening:

Dear (Prevention Coordinator) Bill:
I want to express my gratitude to your association and its volunteers. I am a parent in the ___ School District, and your organization offers vision screening at kindergarten registration...One of your volunteers discovered a problem with my child's vision. I would like to share my story with you and tell of my appreciation of your organization.

When the woman volunteer was checking my daughter's vision, she noticed that my daughter very easily could identify the symbols with her right eye, but she could identify no symbols with the left eye. After trying several times, the volunteer expressed concerns noting that my child obviously understood the task and it did not seem like she was shutting down or refusing to do the task. Your volunteer recommended I speak to my child's doctor about the condition, and some time later she came looking for me to give me the proper paperwork.

Within a few days, we visited our pediatrican's office and had the same results with their eye test. I was then referred to a specialist, Dr. Trachtman. Dr. Trachtman identified the problem, and assured me that the problem could be fixed. He told me, however, that in another six months to a year it may have been too late to fix the problem.

For six weeks after the appointment with Dr. Trachtman, my daughter wore glasses. Her vision improved from 20/160 to 20/50. Even Dr. Tracthman was surprised by this amount of improvement. Also, her depth perception went from none at the first appointment to over half at this second appointment. At that time, we were given a choice to "wait and see" if more improvement occurs or to aggressively treat the problem by patching the right eye for two hours a day. We have chosen to aggressively treat the problem.

I credit your organization with the early discovery of my child's vision problem. I am especially grateful since it was found early enough to be corrected. We are a true success story for your organization. I can't thank you enough for the service you have provided for my child....

With gratitude,
Janet S.
